About the Author

Dante was born, Durante degli Alighieri some time around 1265 in Florence, Italy. Little is known about his early years, however, it is known that his mother died before he turned ten years old. His father remarried and had two additional children. Dante became engaged at the age of twelve and had at least four children. He fought in the Battle of Campaldino in 1289, and joined the Physicians' and Apothecaries' Guild in Florence. Dante became a delegate to Pope Boniface, then a military action while he was in Rome, resulted in his exile. It was during this time, that he conceived "The Divine Comedy." Just after finishing it, in 1321, he contracted malaria and died on September 9, 1321, at the age of 56, in Ravenna. A tomb was built for him in 1483, and another in 1780. A tome was built for him in Florence in 1829, but has remained empty.
