We talked amongst ourselves and came up with this very non-scientific list of our Top 10 books for 2010--not necessarily our bestselling titles, but, rather, our favorites from the fine crop of books that debuted this past year.  Simply put, we love these books the very most, and think you might, too.

Reading Laura Bell’s memoir Claiming Ground connected me to all the reasons I make my home in the West.  As she tries find her place in the New West as the daughter of a Kentucky preacher, Bell tries on a variety of lives, from male-dominated backcountry sheepherding to ski resort masseuse.  Ultimately, though, it is Bell’s gorgeous descriptive writing about both external and internal landscapes that made me fall in love with her writing. --Libby

Cancer is a pretty scary word, and an even scarier diagnosis.  David Servan-Schreiber presents evidence on a cellular level to support his theory that “all of us have cancer cells in our bodies, but not all us will develop cancer.”  He presents  evidence to support this theory in a logical and accessible manner. I loved the hopeful and proactive advice he offers to those living with the fear of cancer.  --Andrea

A remarkable biography that reads like the most compelling adventure fiction.  Louis Zamperini's life took him from the troubled streets of Torrance, California to Hitler's Berlin Olympics to a leaking life raft in the war-torn Pacific Ocean and a cruel Japanese prison camp. When Zamperini finally returns home and faces his greatest spiritual test we are not surprised to see him emerge unbroken. --Clint

It is the rare author who can craft ordinary words into extraordinary sentences to build an entire book of exquisite verbal beauty. Bruce Machart does just that in The Wake of Forgiveness, telling the sometimes heart-wrenching story of the four Skala brothers in a harsh early-1900s Texas landscape. The unexpected twists and turns of this family’s struggles are vividly portrayed from the youngest brother’s point of view, seen through the filter of guilt his family has laid on him for ‘killing his mother’ who died giving birth to him. --Chris

peterWho owns the past and all its remnant artifacts?   Craig Childs delves into this question and examines it from a enough angles to convince most readers that there is no right answer.  While he centers much of the discussion around the archeology in our backyard here in the southwest, he draws worldwide parallels.  Read this book and you’ll never view an Anasazi Pot or even a potshard the same again.  --Peter

shayThe Tiger is part natural history, part elegy, part murder mystery, part supernatural thriller.  Vaillant deftly balances all these acts while exploring the conflicts of man as prey and hunting a tiger with the people who have devoted their lives to saving the species.  This book kicks ass. --Shay

Brady Udall establishes himself as a John Irving for the West with his novel The Lonely Polygamist, a skillfully crafted book that proves that Golden Richards’ polygamist family is really just like any other American family—full of love and more-than-a-little dysfunctional.  Written skillfully from multiple points of view, The Lonely Polygamist is full of humor and heart. --Kathleen

While the subject matter of Room may seem difficult, ultimately Emma Donoghue’s novel is a redemptive story that offers a fascinating perspective into the mind of a young child, five-year-old Jack.  This book is intriguing, powerful, and memorable.  Mystery fans will respond to the suspenseful nature of the story, and all readers will appreciate its masterful portrayal of a mother and son’s quest for meaning.--Pat

This Cheever-esque family saga portrays the heartbreaking efforts of one daughter as she struggles to please and save her alcoholic, yet charismatic, father over decades.  I loved the central character for her growth and perseverance. --Julie

If you read only one account of the Vietnam War, this should be it.  This is a coming-of-age tale that that will make you understand the day-to-day realities of the young men who fought in Southeast Asia—fighting against not just the “enemy,” but racism, prejudices at home, and the elements.  While not an anti-war book, Matterhorn underscores the heartbreaking futility of the soldiers’ experience in a way that has forever changed me. --Jeanne
