Durango resident Brian Epp specializes in violin retouching and restoration. He has written a lovely book called The Art of Violin Retouching and will join us in the shop to sign copies and discuss his work.
Epp opened his violin restoration business in 2001 in Durango where he served the Four Corners area for three years. He then relocated to New England where he studied with master luthiers and instrument restorers. He operated a violin restoration shop in Fairfield County, Connecticut for five years where he restored violins, violas, cellos and basses. He also gave inspirational presentations to children in public school systems and was a guest speaker at conventions in Connecticut and New YorkState. In 2009 Brian wrote an instructional book on violin retouching that compiled a decade of photographs, entitled The Art of Violin Retouching. Published by Henry Strobel Publishing, the book has been well received in the professional world of violin making and restoration.
Brian and his wife Kathleen Marie returned to Durango last fall, where Brian has set up his instrument restoration shop. Much of his business comes through the internet, and he also serves musicians in the Four Corners. Brian particularly enjoys working with children and also restoring what he calls “attic heirlooms” which helps to keeps alive the traditional art of violin restoration.
This event coincides with the San Juan Symphony's arrival in Durango for their performance of "Something Old, Something New" on Sunday, October 10th at the Community Concert Hall.
