Support local literacy this holiday season through the Third Annual Families Helping Families Holiday Book Drive.
Stop in the shop to select a card off the holiday book drive tree\; each card features information about a child served by the Family Development Program of the Family Center of Durango. Booksellers are happy to provide guidance and suggestions for gifts for that particular child\, and Maria's Bookshop will offer a 15% discount on all book drive purchases. The books will be wrapped and presented to the children at their annual holiday party on December 16th.
We're hoping to provide books for 75 children this year\, thanks to the generous support of our community!

Maria's Bookshop will host the "\;Thank God It's Over (TGIO) Celebration"\; for our region. Other local NaNoWriMo events will take place throughout the month\, providing support and inspiration for those involved.

Fort Lewis College professor Dr. Andrew Gulliford will present an illustrated slide lecture at the Durango Public Library on how to "\;read"\; historic photos of Native Americans and how to interpret photographic "\;truth."\; Gulliford will also discuss the meaning and importnace of the book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee\, which has sold three million copies and is now published in an illustrated edition. For the new edition Dr. Gulliford served as one of the consultatnts on the photographs\, artwork and captions and he wrote a "\;Note on the Text and Art."\; His lecture was originally researched and written as part of the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities Speakers.
