8th Annual Book “Schools” La Plata County Residents
Each year, the Be Local Book offers local businesses an opportunity to tell their stories to the community. The book, which is sold at a variety of merchants around Durango, including Maria's Bookshop, provides coupons, story pages, photographs and enlightening educational facts about local economies.
The theme this year, “Getting Schooled: Learning about a Local Economy,” uses local artists, designers and photographers to present a variety of facts about the benefits of a local economy based on independently-owned businesses. The book includes a “quiz,” “course list,” and “report card,” among other fun info-graphics.
The book is a popular gift and sells out quickly, often by the end of January.
“Because we sold out so quickly last year, we had more copies printed this year,” says Local First Managing Director, Kristi Streiffert. “Our goal is that everyone who wants one gets one.”
Local First, a non-profit La Plata County business alliance, publishes the book as part of its mission to support and provide locally-owned, independent businesses and organizations opportunities to thrive as we work together to build an economy that values people, the planet and prosperity for everyone.
